Locating the door or what she thought was the door based on the size and feel of it, she ran her hands along both edges, locating the side with the hinges. Once she found it her hands ran across the door to the knob, and, of course, it was locked. Running her hands up the side with the knob, she was also disappointed to find a thrown deadbolt lock. She felt momentarily defeated and slid to the floor.
Once on the floor, she realized the bluish light in the room came from under the doorway, though faint, it allowed her to make out shapes and shadows, which was how she'd found the shelves that freed her earlier. Trying to ignore the creeps she felt about moving around in a dark damp basement or room, she inhaled and told herself to buck up; then she was immediately sorry she'd inhaled so deeply, the musty air filled her lungs and she coughed. Petrified of making any noise she quickly covered her coughing in the crook of her arm.
There had to be something in here she could use as a weapon the next time someone entered this room. It dawned on her, if they saw she'd gotten free of her restraints, they might tie her up tighter with something else or drug her so she was unconscious. Scrambling back to where she'd dumped the duct tape, she smoothed it out as much as she could to lay them over her wrists and ankles, so when they came back it would appear that she was still tied up.
While peeling the tape from itself, she heard a far door open then close and quickly wrapped the tape around her ankles, then her wrists, praying it looked tight enough.
She sat down where they'd dumped her, her head still foggy from the drug or inhalant they'd used to subdue her, but the adrenaline was helping her to metabolize it quickly which was a bonus.
Footsteps now sounded on the floor near the door and her heartbeat throbbed at an alarming rate and the thrumming in her ears threatened to drown out any other sound. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, held it for a few moments then let it out slowly in an effort to calm herself. Not that it helped much.
Keeping her breathing even she stared in the direction of the door, hoping she'd get a chance to run. The jingling of keys reached her ears, then the keys sliding into the locks, two clicks and the door was opened, and light flooded the room, which hurt her eyes. Closing them briefly, she opened them again and stared at her captor in horror as she saw he was large and wearing a black ski mask. The fact that he didn't want her to see him scared the shit out of her and her heart pounded painfully in her chest.
"Eyes down." His gravelly voice commanded.
Looking at her hands laying in her lap and swallowing rapidly to calm herself further, she tried talking to him in hopes he'd see her as a human.
